Lyrics

On the poor side of Memphis in a one room shack,
Lived a Mother and her Son (Angels: half-blind child),
She called him One Eyed Jack.
Well they didn’t have a nickel, but they had their pride,
And every day was a struggle just to stay alive.

Now Jack found a guitar in an old trash can,
It was a present from the Angels, it seems they had a plan.
So he practiced like the devil, every night and day,
Anyone who ever heard him knew the boy could play, and his Momma said…

Play! Play, One Eyed Jack! Reach for the stars and don’t look back.
Keep your roots but leave this shack,
Play a song for me, One Eyed Jack.

Well he promised to his Mother that one day he’d be back,
To buy her everything she wanted and get her out of that shack.
So he dropped out of high school and he hit the road,
His final destination was a pot of gold. And his Momma said….

Play! Play, One Eyed Jack! Reach for the stars and don’t look back.
Keep your roots but leave this shack,
Play a song for me, One Eyed Jack.

Soon he got a contract, a great big record deal,
It was time for Jack to buy his Mom that mansion on the hill.

Well, the limousine pulled up to the shack one night,
Jack was ready to surprise her and finally make things right.
He called out to his Mother, and then he walked right in,
The only answer that he heard was from the howling wind.
A neighbor said the Winter had been cold and long,
Her health started slipping and she couldn’t hold on.
But she left Jack a letter and to this very day,
You can see it in his front shirt pocket every time he hits the stage.
And the letter said…

Play! Play, One Eyed Jack! Reach for the stars and don’t look back…
